Preparing an SNHU clinical placement in Virginia

SNHU currently lists Virginia among the states accepting FNP students. Its FNP application asks the applicant to identify one potential preceptor, but identification does not complete approval. The student must remain domiciled in an eligible state and complete practicum in the reported state of domicile. Confirm the candidate, practice arrangement, patient population, site, course, term, and documents before clinical activity begins.

AANP categorizes Virginia as restricted practice. State law restricts at least one element of NP practice and requires regulated career-long supervision, delegation, or team management. Review the clinician's actual authority and practice arrangement. An SNHU student remains limited to approved supervision, objectives, and organization policy.

The Virginia Board of Nursing provides official APRN resources and licensing information. Search the legal name, confirm active credentials, role, population focus, and public restrictions, and document the practice arrangement supporting the clinician's work. Keep the verification date with the placement file.

For FNP, verify family or primary care preparation and a suitable patient panel. Non-NP MSN supervisors need appropriate graduate preparation and responsibility in education, quality, leadership, or population health. RN-to-BSN community activity may use another qualified oversight profile. Current SNHU criteria determine fit.

Northern Virginia offers a dense clinical market. Richmond provides another broad hub. Hampton Roads includes Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Newport News. Charlottesville, Roanoke, Winchester, the Shenandoah Valley, Lynchburg, Danville, Bristol, and Abingdon expand regional options.

Traffic and geography make a precise corridor more useful than a statewide search. Send the SNHU course, patient or project needs, term, schedule, and repeatable travel range. Ask who controls affiliation and student intake. A Maryland, District of Columbia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, or Kentucky site requires its own review.

SNHU publishes a minimum 750 total FNP clinical hours under preceptors across five courses. Use that total for the overall sequence, confirm the current requirement for each course, and avoid contradictory per-course arithmetic. A Virginia site should be screened for the current patient population, supervisor availability, and term capacity.

Each non-NP MSN specialization publishes 135 practicum hours. RN-to-BSN includes community clinical practice experiences without a single fixed total for all students. SNHU has no DNP. The clinical hours guide provides an overview while current course documents govern.

Virginia FNP students also need SNHU's required in-person New Hampshire immersion, separate from clinical hours at an approved Virginia site. Schedule the immersion, practicum, work obligations, travel, and onboarding together without treating the immersion as clinical placement.

Ask the organization about agreements, applications, compliance records, training, and deadlines. A clinician's interest does not authorize the site. Maintain a backup until the university and organization have completed review.

SNHU describes clinical hours at an in-person location and does not publish a blanket telehealth allowance or named tracking system. Physical attendance is the planning baseline, and students should obtain current documentation instructions.
