Southern New Hampshire University makes its MSN-FNP students self-source their own clinical preceptors, and it gives no placement guarantee. In fact, SNHU asks you to identify a potential preceptor before you are even admitted. This page explains how SNHU's FNP clinical model works and how we fit into it.
Does SNHU place FNP students with a preceptor?
No. SNHU does not place MSN-FNP students, and it offers no placement guarantee. You are responsible for finding your own preceptor and clinical site.
SNHU's requirement starts at the admissions stage: applicants to the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner track must identify one potential preceptor for a clinical practicum as part of applying. That means the burden of sourcing clinical support sits with you from the very beginning, not the university.
This is where an independent service helps. We are not SNHU and we do not speak for SNHU, but we do the legwork of locating, contacting, and vetting a preceptor and site that meet SNHU's practicum criteria so you are not cold-calling clinics on your own.
How many clinical hours does the SNHU FNP require?
SNHU's program page lists 750 clinical practicum hours for the MSN-FNP, and MSN-FNP is the only nurse practitioner track SNHU offers.
Those 750 hours are spread across five practicum courses, structured as 135 + 135 + 135 + 135 + 110 hours. The full degree is 51 credits across 17 courses.
One honesty note on the hour count: 750 is what SNHU's current program page states, but an SNHU libguide references 650. Confirm your exact required total against current SNHU materials before you plan rotations, since the number drives how many preceptor placements you need. We treat 750 per SNHU's program page as the working figure but always tell students to verify.
What is the New Hampshire immersion requirement?
The SNHU MSN-FNP includes a mandatory in-person immersion in New Hampshire, coded NUR-600. It carries a $2,000 cost on top of tuition.
This is an on-ground residency component that you cannot complete online, so factor the travel, time, and the additional $2,000 into your budget. It is separate from your clinical practicum hours and separate from anything our placement service covers.
Our fee never includes SNHU tuition, the immersion cost, or any university charge. We only handle preceptor and site sourcing and verification.
Who is eligible for the SNHU FNP track?
SNHU requires two years of full-time RN experience to enter the MSN-FNP track, and the program is available in about 17 states.
Because state availability is limited, confirm your state is currently served before committing. Certification after graduation is available through the AANPCB or ANCC boards.
The MSN-FNP is SNHU's only NP option. SNHU has no PMHNP, no other NP specialty, no DNP, and no ADN. If you need one of those, SNHU is not the school for it.
Who handles compliance, background checks, and insurance?
You do. Compliance is student-borne at SNHU. Each clinical site sets its own background check and immunization requirements, and SNHU names no vendor for these.
SNHU also requires you to carry your own malpractice insurance for the practicum. These obligations follow you, not the university, so build them into your timeline.
When we match you, we verify that a preceptor and site are legitimate and SNHU-approvable, but you remain responsible for meeting each site's specific background, immunization, and insurance conditions.
What does our placement service cost?
Our fee is $1,500 to $2,500 per rotation, and you pay when you are matched, not upfront.
The fee covers sourcing and verifying a qualified, SNHU-approvable preceptor and clinical site and getting you practicum-ready. It does not include paying the preceptor, SNHU tuition, the NUR-600 immersion, or your malpractice insurance.

How do SNHU's FNP hours lead to national certification?
The 750 practicum hours are not only a graduation requirement; they feed the eligibility rules of the boards that certify you. SNHU's master's nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and both national FNP boards require graduation from a CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA accredited program. The American Nurses Credentialing Center sets a floor of 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours plus three graduate APRN core courses, advanced physiology and pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, and advanced pharmacology, before you can sit for the FNP-BC exam. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board administers the entry-level FNP-C exam that CCNE-accredited graduates are eligible for. SNHU's 750-hour sequence clears the 500-hour floor with room to spare, but only if every rotation is supervised by a qualified, verifiable preceptor and documented properly. That is why the preceptor you source matters as much as the hour count: an unqualified match can put those hours, and your certification eligibility, at risk.
